All that glitters …

What is Glitterburg potion you may ask?

Glitterbug potion and a UV light is one of the ways that we can monitor handwashing standards to make sure that an effective level of infection prevention and control is maintained.

Sarah, our Training Manager, explained that a small amount of the potion is put on staffs' hands and they are asked to go and wash and dry their hands.  The potion mimics the contamination that a colleague's hand could pick up while supporting a resident.  After this has been completed their hands are examined under the UV light and any potion not removed is revealed.

Advice can then be given about areas of the hand that need a little more attention paying to them, restating the methodology required to achieve a clinical standard of cleanliness.

Hand washing is our most effective tool to prevent the spread of infection – checks are carried out regularly to make sure that the standard of hand washing remains high.
